Walking by Faith, Not By Sight

Faith says, “God is working, even when I don’t feel it.”

“For we walk by faith, not by sight.” — 2 Corinthians 5:7

“Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things unseen.” — Hebrews 11:1

“As women navigating the complexities of life—careers, relationships, marriage, motherhood, and personal growth—it’s easy to rely on what we can see and understand. But faith calls us to something deeper: trusting God even when we can’t see the whole picture.

Faith is not wishful thinking; it’s confidence in God’s promises. Hebrews 11:1 reminds us that faith is the substance of what we hope for, meaning it has weight and reality, even if we can’t see it yet. Faith says, “God is working, even when I don’t feel it.”

Over four years ago, I was faced with the reality of taking a step of faith. I moved to Washington DC to help plant Union City Church. Here’s the kicker, I had never been to DC before, let alone help plant a church! Yet I knew God was calling me here to help be a small part in His bigger picture. Having to make this decision wasn’t easy. It was hard, scary, and at times incredibly lonely, but I refused to let fear control me. I’m very much a “type A, planner, organizer, logistic thinking” kind of woman. I have to see the plan perfectly mapped out with every little detail thought through. This call from God was far from that, and if I’m being completely honest for a moment, it was scary. But instead of focusing on what I didn’t know or couldn’t see, I chose to trust in God’s promises. He has never once failed me. For once in my life, I didn’t have a “perfectly mapped out” plan for myself. I knew I had to set that aside and follow the One who is perfect and has already mapped out my plan according to His will. Over time, I saw His faithfulness in ways I never expected— authentic community, divine connection, unexpected provision, and a deep sense of purpose. I even met my husband in this process! Talk about blessings! I’m walking in the faithfulness of God. Looking back, I see that every challenge was an opportunity to trust Him more. To obey His call, and honor His timing. Even when I couldn’t see the other side.

So how can we walk by faith and not by sight?

1. Trust God’s Timing

Sometimes, God’s plans unfold differently than we expect. Maybe you’re waiting for a breakthrough—a job, a spouse, healing, or clarity. Instead of relying on what you see (or don’t see), trust that God’s timing is perfect. Isaiah 60:22 says, “At the right time, I, the Lord, will make it happen.” Walking by faith means resting in His divine schedule.

2. Speak God’s Promises Over Your Life

When doubts creep in, counter them with Scripture. Instead of saying, “I don’t know if this will ever change,” declare, “God is working all things together for my good” (Romans 8:28). Your words shape your faith—choose to speak life, not fear. Choose to speak hope, not doubt.

3. Take the Next Step, Even When ____

Faith isn’t passive - it requires action. Maybe God is nudging you toward something—starting a business, joining a ministry, or letting go of a toxic situation. You don’t have to see the whole staircase; just take the next step in obedience. Fill in the blank to your circumstance. Take the next step even when it’s ___ unclear, scary, stressful. As you move forward, God will guide you.

Walking by faith is a daily and self sacrificial choice to trust God, even when circumstances seem uncertain. Today, choose to believe that He is leading you, loving you, and working all things for your good.”

Prayer:

Lord, help me to walk by faith and not by sight. Strengthen my trust in You, even when I can’t see the full picture. I surrender my worries, my fears, and my plans to You, Lord. Lead me, guide me, and strengthen me so that I may always walk by faith and not by sight. Remind me of Your promises and guide my steps.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
