Trusting God in Uncertain Times

Trusting God in seasons of uncertainty is never easy, but it is always worth it.

Sarah Watkins

I still remember bowing my head at the Liverpool Cathedral, surrendering my future to a faithful Creator. As I stood at the altar, the weight of uncertainty threatened to hold me captive. It was the end of a summer working for a church in Liverpool, United Kingdom. Both rewarding service and relentless anxiety marked that summer. Before arriving in Liverpool, I had made a terrifying leap of faith: resigning from a career I had held for seven years, with no clear plan for what would come next. The church internship had provided temporary direction, but as the weeks passed, the reality of my return to the U.S. loomed over me. I had no job, no clear career path, and, to make things even more unsettling, I sensed God calling me to move away from home. Every day, I faced overwhelming anxiety and questions—What would I do? Where would I go? Had I made a mistake? There was so much uncertainty about my future.

On that gloomy day at the Liverpool Cathedral, I bowed my head and turned my attention to the scene carved into the altar: Jesus teaching His twelve disciples. I studied their earnest faces and my heart stirred. The twelve disciples, Jesus’ closest friends, were called out of their old lives. Many had left behind jobs, familiar towns, and the comfort of lifelong relationships to follow Him into the unknown. They, too, had faced uncertainty about the future. Yet, they chose to stay close to Jesus. At that moment, I knew what I had to do. I resolved in my heart that I would trust God and stay close to Him.

Trusting God in seasons of uncertainty is never easy, but it is always worth it. His presence brings a peace that anchors us when everything else feels unpredictable. Whether you're facing job insecurity, financial struggles, loneliness, or pain, God remains constant—your ever-present help in times of trouble (Psalm 46:1). One of the most powerful truths to hold onto in uncertain times is the “withness” of God. You are never alone. The “withness” of God strengthens us as we brave the unknown and teaches us to face the future resilient and courageously. Even when the future feels unclear, God’s Word reminds us that He promises to guide, strengthen, and hold us up as we place our trust in Him.

Sis, when worry creeps in, counter it with truth. The Bible calls us to meditate on Scriptures that declare God’s faithfulness. Pray boldly for strength as you trust in God. He is Emmanuel-God with us. His constant presence allows us to move forward in faith no matter what lies ahead.

Reflection:

What is one area of uncertainty where you can actively trust God today?

Meditation:

Isaiah 41:10 (NLT)

Don’t be afraid, for I am with you.

Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God.

I will strengthen you and help you.

I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.

Proverbs 3:5,6 (NKJV)

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and he shall direct your paths.
